Press Release 26 August 2012

It doesn't seem five minutes ago that he bowls season started, and already it's nearly over. Perhaps it was the delayed start due to the heavy rains that we experienced during the drought, and consequently there are still teams juggling for places in the various leagues. In the East Herts League division 1, Welwyn and District Stags started the week with two games to play; a situation that several of their close competitors were also encountering, and with only four points separating the top four clubs there was everything to play for. Stags started the week with an away game against Bengeo Reds, and the six points which they came away with raised their hopes of a successful end to the season. Datchworth Blues had other ideas however, visiting Welwyn on Thursday and taking the lions share of the points, leaving the Stags with only two points. However other teams were also stumbling at the last fence and with all of their games completed the Stags finished one point behind Welwyn Garden City Lions. Hertingfordbury and Ware Maltsters still have one game each to play, and both could surpass both the Stags and the Lions.
It was a mixed week for Welwyn Wanderers in the Welwyn Hatfield League. They lost to Kimpton by 23 shots with the rink of Ray Uffen, Hazel Wing and Tony Holdcroft losing by 19 shots to 11, whilst the rink of Margaret Holdcroft, Sybil Noel and Sylvia Hill lost by 24 shots to 9. This resulted in an overall score of 43 shots to 20 in Kimpton's favour.
Later in the same week they beat WGC Crusaders by 3 shots. The rink of Alan Wilding, Margaret Holdcroft and Hazel Wing lost by 18 shots to 11, whilst the rink of Pauline Wilding, Pat Thompson and Sylvia Hill won by 19 shots to 9. This resulted in an overall score of 30 shots to 27 in the Wanderers favour.
In the Jubilee Cup semi-final, Welwyn Woods gave the Division 1 team of Harlequins a good match, losing overall by 5 shots. The away team of Liz Edwards, Gloria Turner, Jillian Jennings and Gus Edwards against four men were 8 shots to 1 down after 5 ends, but fought back to win 19 shots to 15. Unfortunately the home team of Babs Nicholson, Peter Bowyer, Deb Squires and Averil Balnaves lost by 25 shots to 16. This resulted in an overall score of 40 shots to 35 in Harlequins favour, who progress to the final.

Press Release 19 August 2012

This week was crunch time in the Hertfordshire Bowls County Club League with most of the six clubs in Area B having only one or two games left to play. For Welwyn and District, lying in second place with two games to play, it meant that points were needed from away games at Hatfield and Potters Bar. The good news on arrival at Hatfield on Monday was that they had beaten Potters Bar who were lying in third place. Welwyn won on one rink, lost on the other but came away with four points thanks to a superior shot difference. So the journey to Potters Bar on Friday was optimistic because Welwyn were now more or less assured of second place, but four points from the Potters bar game would result in top place. Welwyn's optimism suffered a set back as Phil Russell's rink found the challenging Potters Bar green hard to cope with and as a result of them losing the margin was too great for Chris Sherriff's winning rink to offset and Welwyn only came away with two points. So second place in the table and the prospect of playing Harpenden in the first match of the play-offs on September 2nd.
In the first division of the East Herts League the long postponed game against Sele Farm finally took place on Wednesday, and resulted in a win on both rinks for Welwyn Stags and a substantial addition of 38n shots to the overall shot difference. This result puts the Stags in third position after 12 matches, one shot behind Welwyn Garden City Lions (54 from 13 matches) who are one shot behind Hertingfordbury (55 from 12 matches). In the St Albans & District Mens Rinks League Welwyn and District beat Harpenden by one shot, winning on two rinks and losing on two. In the semi-final of the Welwyn and Hatfield John Brown Cup, Welwyn Wanderers lost to BSP by 15 shots. The home rink of Peter Townsend, Hazel Wing and Chris Read lost by 22 shots to 12 whilst the away rink of Margaret Holdcroft, Alan Fitts and Tony Holdcroft lost by 20 shots to 15. This resulted in an overall score of 42 shots to 27 shots in BSP's favour.
Welwyn Wanderers lost to Shire Park in the league by 23 shots. The rink of Alan Wilding, Pat Thompson and Sybil Noel lost by 18 shots to 12 whilst the rink of Pauline Wilding, Peter Townsend and Sylvia Hill lost by 23 shots to 6. This resulted in an overall score of 41 shots to 18 in Shire Park's favour. In a friendly match against Whithern W&DBC won 4 rinks, lost 2 rinks, won on overall score 123-75. Top rink Doreen Fitts, Deb Squires, Chris Sherriff. And to round off the week, in a friendly match at Barton le Clay Welwyn won on four rinks whilst Barton won on two but managed to get the overall shot difference by 2 shots (90-92). Top rink for Welwyn was Alan Wilding, Dorothy Henton and skip Jean Webb who won 21-8.

Friendly Match, Mixed Triples at Barton le Clay

In a friendly match at Barton le Clay Welwyn won on four rinks whilst Barton won on two but managed to get the overall shot difference by 2 shots (90-92). Top rink for Welwyn was Alan Wilding, Dorothy Henton and skip Jean Webb who won 21-8.

Friendly Match, Mixed Triples v. Whithern

W&DBC won 4 rinks, lost 2 rinks, won on overall score 123-75. Top rink Doreen Fitts, Deb Squires, Chris Sherriff.

Herts Count Club League; Friday 17 August

Welwyn visited Potters Bar, hoping for a minimum of four points which would leave them top of the Area South group. Sadly it was not to be and whilst Chris Sherriff's rink (John Lee, Peter Townsend, Barry Smith and Chris) won 21-15, Phil Russell's rink were unable to cope with the challenging green and lost 13-27. Nevertheless W&DBC will finish in second spot and so will contest the play offs on September 2nd (at W&DBC incidentally). This will be the fourth year in a row that Welwyn have reached the play-offs, having gone through to the Ginder Cup county playoffs in the previous three, one of which they won.

East Herts League; Wednesday 15 August

Welwyn Stags were due to play Sele Farm back in May but the game had to be rescheduled due to waterlogged greens. Another delay followed (this one to suit Sele Farm) and now at last the day had come. The result was a convincing win on both rinks for the Stags, 21-14 and 37-8. This brings the Stags points total to 53 from 13 matches, and places us third in the league table, one point behind WGC Lions who in turn are one point behind Hertingfordbury.

Welwyn Hatfield League

In the semi-final of the John Brown Cup, Welwyn Wanderers lost to BSP by 15 shots.
In the league Welwyn Wanderers lost to Shire Park by 23 shots.

Herts Count Club League; Monday 13 August

Welwyn visited Hatfield and came away with four points, thanks to a convincing win by Chris Sherriff's rink, offsetting the loss by Phil Russell's rink but nevertheless leaving W&DBC with the overall shot difference.

27 July, Ranson Cup (Press Release 12-08-12)

In this Home and Away fixture Ware BC came to Welwyn with a strong side which resulted in a frustrating match for the Welwyn side, and finishing with a win for Ware by 21 shots to 16. Welwyn's away team had a very different experience, winning 34-18, and thus giving Welwyn the overall win. This take Welwyn through to the semi-final which will be played on August 8.

East Herts League

Thanks to the wet start to the season, the fixture list is becoming increasingly congested and Welwyn Stags were involved in two league games during the week. An away trip to Much Hadham gave us a disappointing four points, largely due to Welwyn's inability to cope with the heavy Much Hadham green.Chris Sherriff's rink won easily, but Sam Smith's rink struggled after a promising start and played the last seven ends without scoring a shot.
A home match against Castle Knights of Hertford was a different story, Phil Russell's rink winning 18-13 and Chris Sherriff's winning 25-11

Welwyn Hatfield League

In the John Brown Trophy, Welwyn Wanderers defeated De Havilland by 6 shots.
The away Rink of Margaret Holdcroft, Alan Fitts and Tony Holdcroft lost by 20 shots to 14, whilst the home Rink of Peter Townsend, Hazel Wing and Chris Read won by 22 shots to 10. This gave an overall score of 36 shots to 30 in Welwyn Wanderers favour.
In the League, however, Welwyn Wanderers lost away to Kimpton by 31 shots. The rink of Pat Thompson, Sybil Noel and Tony Holdcroft lost by 18 shots to 8, whilst the rink of Margaret Holdcroft, Hazel Wing and Peter Townsend lost by 31 shots to 10. This resulted in an overall score of 49 shots to 18 in Kimpton's favour.
Welwyn Woods had a close match with Knebworth B at home losing by 1 shot. The rink of Gloria Turner, Deb Squires and Gus Edwards won by 21 shots to 13, whilst the rink of Babs Nicholson, Liz Edwards and Chris Squires lost by 19 shots to 10. This resulted in an overall score of 32 shots to 31 in Knebworth's favour.
Also in the league, Welwyn Woods lost away to Shamrock by 27 shots. The rink of Babs Nicholson, Liz Edwards and Chris Squires lost by 14 shots to 9, whilst the rink of Kate Green, Deb Squires and Malcolm Marvell lost by 27 shots to 5. This resulted in an overall score of 41 shots to 14 in Shamrock's favour.

Wednesday 25 July, Friendly Match, WGC

Welwyn and District played Welwyn Garden City BC this afternoon, 5 rinks mixed,
The result was a loss for Welwyn 79 - 110
The only consolation is that the Ladies and the Men's Captains won on their rinks.

Friday 20 July, Jones Cup

With eight players involved in the County Club League game at Radlett it was a weakened Welwyn team that played Hemel Hempstead Home and Away. The Away team skipped by Sam Smith drew 14-14, but the home team skipped by Phil Russell lost.

Saturday 14 July, Friendly Match at Baldock (Press Release 15 July)

Baldock put out a very strong team which included a Middleton Cup bowler and a 10 year old girl who is a member of the Amy Rose squad. The afternoon stayed mercifully free of rain, but Welwyn failed to win on any of the rinks. They did however do better in the post match raffle.

The rink of Alan Wilding, Margaret Holdcroft and Sylvia Hill won by 23 shots to 16 while the rink of Pat Thompson, Pauline Wilding and Tony Holdcroft won by 21 shots to 11. This resulted in an overall score of 44 shots to 27 in Welwyn Wanderers favour.
On Monday, the Welwyn Woods team drew away against Shire Park. The rink of Liz Edwards, Jillian Jennings and Malcolm Marvell won by 21 shots to 13 while the rink of Averil Balnaves, Barbara Marvell and Les Page lost by 23 shots to 15. This resulted in an overall score of 36 shots to each club.

The rink of Gloria Turner, Babs Nicholson and Gus Edwards lost by 18 shots to 15 while the rink of Breanne Cook, Deb Squires and Les lost by 20 shots to 7. This resulted in an overall score of 38 shots to 22 in De Havilland's favour.

Friday 6 July, Jones Cup (Press Release 8-07-12)

Last year Batchwood Hall BC lost their club house and green as a result of a fire, and consequently they have to rely on casual use of greens belonging to other clubs to get their practice. Consequently in the Jones Cup match at Welwyn and District we hosted both their Away and "Home" teams. Despite the final score the match was played in a very sporting atmosphere, with lots of lighthearted badinage. W&DBC won comfortably, Sam Smith's rink winning (John Lee, Nigel Woor, Stan Kenworthy and Sam), and Phil Russell's rink winning 38-9 (Ian Snook, Mike Poole, Ted Webb & Phil).

Welwyn Bucks success

In an East Herts League home match against Northaw and Cuffley the Bucks got a very welcome six points, both Don Ellis' and Nigel Woor's rinks winning by two shots. Final score 37-33 to the Bucks.

Thursday 5 July, East Herts League (Press Release 8-07-12)

For the second match running, Stags only got two points. Away at Hertingfordbury, Ian Snook, Mike Poole and Phil Russell won 20-13, but John Lee, Barry Smith and Sam Smith lost 11-19 giving Hertingfordbury the overall win by just one shot.

Welwyn Hatfield Mixed League (Press Release 8-07-12)

In the Welwyn Hatfield Mixed League, despite playing an all male WGC Crusaders team, the Welwyn Woods team comprising 4 women and 2 men won by a narrow margin of 1 shot. The rink of Malcolm Marvell, Barbara Marvell and Kate Green drew 12-12, while the rink of Babs Nicholson, Deb Squires and Les Page won 13 shots to 12. This resulted in an overall score of 25 shots to 24 in Welwyn Woods favour.
However, the Welwyn Wanderers team lost away to De Havilland by 10 shots. The rink of Pat Thompson, Brian Richardson and Alan Fitts lost by 22 shots to 13, while the rink of Doreen Fitts, Ray Uffen and Peter Townsend lost narrowly by 16 shots to 15. This resulted in an overall score of 38 shots to 28 shots in De Havilland's favour.

Tuesday 3 July, 2012. Friendly match against Stevenage. (Press Release 8-07-12)

We almost got through this one without getting wet, but a slight shower in the middle of the game sent us all scurrying for our "wets".
Re-arranged from the program because Stevenage wanted to play three fours games, we played three woods for the lead and two, and two woods for the skip, whilst they played two woods each.
For a change we had a supporters club present in the shape of club founder and life member Betty Small, who now lives just across the road from the Stevenage green.
Jean Webb skipped the only winning rink, aided by John Edwards and Tony Holdcroft. Ted Webb's rink played out a draw (Ted, Malcolm Marvell, and Averil Balnaves), and Les Page's rink lost by three leaving us as overall losers by just one shot (Les, Debra Squires and Dorothy Henton).

Monday 2 July, 2012. Herts Club League (Press Release 8-07-12)

On what has become the norm for this "summer", our County League match against North Mymms began in rain. Add to this the fact that we were short of Chris, Barry, Phil and Mike (on County 4s duty) we were not feeling terribly optimistic. Some while later things had changed. The rain had stopped, Stan Kenworthy's rink had won by 11 shots, and the final bowl of the evening gave Sam Smith's rink a one shot victory despite never having been ahead throughout the rest of the game. Cliff-hangers are becoming too much of a regular ocurrence, but six points are always worth celebrating.
Rink 1; Sam Smith, Ted Webb, David Humphreys and Tony Holdcroft. Rink 2; Stan Kenworthy, Chris Read, Jim Summerfield and Peter Townsend.

Sunday 1 July, 2012. (Press release 1 July)

A team of four triples from Welwyn & District Bowls Club visited Pegs Lane Hertford to play a friendly match against Hertford Castle. At half time the score was equal at 29 shots apiece, but a refreshing cup of tea put the visiting team into a scoring mode and the final score was 72 shots to 59 for Welwyn & District. The top triple for Welwyn was Barbara Marvell, Tony Holdcroft and Skip Mary Clements with a plus 15, and Chris Read (Skip) Ray Uffen and Margaret Holdcroft following close with a plus 14 shot difference.

Saturday 30 June, 2012. National Over 55s Pairs (Press release 1 July)

Saturday 30 June, 2012. St.Albans and District Rinks League

Thursday 28 June, 2012. East Herts League (Press release 1 July)

W&DBC Stags finally got to play Hertford Castles in a game which had been Away then Home and finally Away at Hertford. Sadly it was not to be an evening to celebrate, Phil Russell aided by Mike Poole and Ted Webb building a head on the final end which found us holding five shots until with the final bowl the Hertford skip cut the count to four, giving us a win by one shot and salvaging two points from an evening which could have been disastrous. (Chris Sherriff's rink having lost 11-18).

Tuesday 26 June, 2012. East Herts League (Press release 1 July)

On a damp evening at Sawbridgeworth the two W&DBC triples both struggled to find the right combination of line and length. Chris Sherriff's triple narrowly lost to Alan Benson-Nutt and his team by one shot, with Phil Russell's triple going into the last end three shots down. Desperation lent inspiration to the efforts of John Lee and Ted Webb and with help from Phil we ended up holding five, until with the final bowl the Sawbridgeworth skip cut the count to four, giving us a one shot win. Three points to both teams.

W/e 17 June, 2012. East Herts League

Exciting times for the Bucks and Harts last week. Both teams won, getting 4 points each.
Bucks played Havers White at home with Stan, Jim and Malcolm bringing home the bacon with a 28-6 win. Don, Graham H, and Nigel almost made it, going down by just 1 point, after being 11-5 up at the 13th. Not sure what happened on the last few ends, but it wasn't good for us.
Harts confronted Cheshunt, also at home. Chris R, Gus, and Andy did the business in a 22-18 win which included a hotshot on the 17th end to bring them back from almost certain defeat. Unfortunately, Graham D, Arthur, and Bob faded on their 17th end to drop a 4 and lost 16-17.
This week both team play again.
Bucks away to Knebworth on Tuesday 19th. Teams 1 & 3 playing again
Harts at home to Stevenage Blue on Monday 18th. Teams 2 & 3 playing (Gus subbing for Bob) and Pete T (Debbie) feeding us afterwards.
This weeks report woukd not be complete without special thanks to Gus and Liz for their splendid post match refreshments last week. Can any of us ever compete with that??

Tuesday 5 June, 2012. National Two Fours.

On an evening when the rain never stopped, we had to play our game against Holwell BC with a weakened team as some of the regular squad had previous committments. Alan Young, Andy Scholes, Malcolm Baldwin and skip Phil Russell started well but got stuck mid game and ended up losing. Frank Crampton, Don Ellis, Ted Webb and skip John Lee did rather better and with one end to go were leading and needing only second wood to win. Sadly, with the last wood of the game the Holwell skip trailed the jack, giving Holwell three shots and the win overall.

This resulted in an overall score of 42 shots to 30 in Knebworth ‘B’s favour.
There was mixed success in the John Brown Cup Competition. Welwyn Woods lost narrowly to Shire Park. Despite the rink of Liz Edwards, Jillian Jennings and Gus Edwards winning away by 15 shots to 12, the home team of Les Page, Val Challacombe and Alwyn Challacombe lost by 19 shots to 12. This resulted in a victory for Shire Park by 4 shots. The Welwyn Wanderers team however overcame WGC Knights. The away rink of Margaret Holdcroft, Alan Fitts and Tony Holdcroft winning by 22 shots to 10 shots, while the home team of Hazel Wing, Peter Townsend and Chris Read won by 24 shots to 20. This resulted in a victory for the Wanderers by 16 shots.

Saturday 2 June, 2012. Top Ten (Press Report 3 June)

Welwyn and District bowlers travelled to Harperbury, but came away empty handed, Harperbury winning the singles and triples whilst Welwyn won the Fours; the pairs, although leading at the time, didn't finish as the overall shot difference was too great for them to overcome which meant that Harpebury would win the match.

Friday 1 June, 2012. East Herts League (Press Report 3 June)

Welwyn Stags travelled to Havers Park for the third league game of their season, winning on one rink by 27-10 but narrowly losing 16-17 on the other. Welwyn Stags entertained Ware Maltsters, newly promoted to division 1 at the start of the season. Ware put up a dogged fight but Welwyn emerged the winners on both rinks, Chris sherriff, Barry Smith and Ian Snook winning by 23-12 whilst Phil Russell, Ted Webb and Mike Poole won 20-12.
In the second division it was an all Welwyn and District clash as the Welwyn Harts took on the Welwyn Bucks. The match ended honours even, both teams winning on one rink and losing on the other, with the total scores tied. So 3 points each.

Sunday 27 May, 2012. National Two Fours (Press Release 27 May)

Drawn at home once again, Welwyn and District faced a strong team from Bishops Stortford, led by County East Chairman Don Fox.
Welwyn drew ahead strongly in the first half of the match, with Chris Sherriff's rink opening up a 17-4 lead after 9 ends, and Phil Russell's rink leading 21-7 after 11 ends. But Bishops Stortford were not going to give in easily and at one point the lead on Phil's rink was reduced to three shots. Welwyn in turn fought back eventually running out winners by 27-19. Chris' rink also kept their noses well in front finishing 24-14 winners.

On the other rink the Wanderers team of Margaret Holdcroft, Alan Fitts and Sybil Noel won by 18 shots to 12 against the Woods rink of Les Page, Barbara Marvel and Chris Squires. Saturday 26 May, 2012. W&DBC v. Rosedale (Press Release 27 May)

Diana Barrett contributed the following -

After a slow start to the bowling season due to cold & very wet weather conditions, six mixed rinks of Welwyn & District bowlers visited the home green of Rosedale Bowls Club, Cheshunt. It was a beautiful afternoon complimented by the warm welcome from the Rosedale members. At 10 ends Rosedale were ahead by 55 shots to 33 shots. But tea arrived and, refreshed, the Welwyn rinks managed to pull back to a final score of 105 to 113. The green was very challenging but the Welwyn team adjusted well.
The Club has successfully recruited a number of new members this season some of whom were playing in the Rosedale game. They were Val & Alwyn Challacombe, and welcome back Sue Stone & Malcolm Marvell

Thusday 24 May, 2012. Harts and Bucks (Press Release 27 May)

Chris Read writes

Three matches played this week, all at home, with variable outcomes.

Monday night, Harts had a 4 pointer v Standon & Puckeridge - who were the team promoted with us last year. Chris R, Chris S, and Pete had 30-9 win, which was just enough to offset the 27-8 defeat for Graham, Arthur, and Bob. All credit to the losing team though - they fought back well to get those 8 points late in the game and ensure we got the overall match result.

Tuesday night v Northaw & Cuffley was a different story for the Harts. Chris R, Pete, and Chris S went down 12-22, while Terry, Andy, and Bob went down by 12-15.....so 'nil point' as they say. Think we were just outbowled so no excuses there. Divsion 2 is a tougher proposition than Div 3.

The Bucks had a good result on Tuesday. Although Don, Graham, and Colin went down 12-17, Malcolm, Norman, and David pulled out all the stops with a 5 on the last end to secure a 20-14 win - giving them the match by a single point and 4 points in the league.

Next match should be a thriller; the Bucks play the Harts next Wednesday, 30th May. Teams 2 & 3 for the Bucks play teams 1 & 3 from the Harts (with Graham subbing for Chris S). I wonder what will happen that night??

Friday 18 May, 2012. Eversley Trophy (Press Release 20 May)

Welwyn and District travelled to Harpenden, always a good venue for a keenly contested match.
Sadly Welwyn's efforts were not good enough on this occasion and we lost on two rinks and drew on the third.
Chris Sherriff's rink(Chris, Barry Smith, Peter Townsend, and John Lee) lost by two shots against Dave Brookes's team.
Sam Smith's rink (Sam, Malcolm Baldwin, Chris Read and Mike Poole) lost by ten shots against Nick Muir's team.
Phil Russell's rink (Phil, Ted Webb, Tony Holdcroft and Ian Snook) held on for the draw with Tony Redford's team.

Thursday 17 May, 2012. Ranson Cup (Press Release 20 May)

Played home and away against Sawbridgeworth the Away rink of Phil Russell, Barry Smith, Malcolm Baldwin and Mike Poole won 26-18, whilst the Home rink (Chris Sherriff, Sam Smith, Tony Holdcroft and Johh Lee) won 26-18

Monday 14 May, 2012. County League (Press Release 20 May)

Welwyn and District travelled to Harperbury on an evening which threatened heavy rain (which fortunately never materialised).
Welwyn lagged behind on both rinks until the tenth end; therefter Phil Russell's rink (Phil, Barry Smith, Ted Webb, Mike Poole) were never seriously challenged, running out winners at 23-12.
Chris Sherriff's rink (Chris, Sam Smith, Malcolm Baldwin, John Lee) had a real ding-dong battle, with the lead changing several times, and the final result was in doubt until Chris bowled the last wood of the evening to secure a 23-21 win.

Week ending Sunday 13 May, 2012. Welwyn Hatfield League (Press Release 20 May)

Despite the wet weather, both of the Welwyn and District bowls teams in the Welwyn Hatfield League have managed to complete matches.
The Welwyn Woods lost by one shot to Shamrock with the rink of Liz Edwards, Jillian Jennings & Les Page winning 15 shots to 14 and the rink of Gloria Turner, Gus Edwards & Chris Squires losing 16 shots to 14. This resulted in an overall score of 30 shots to 29 to Shamrock.
The Welwyn Wanderers match with WGC Crusaders was not so close with the rink of Alan Wilding, Alan Fitts & Tony Holdcroft winning 18 shots to 16 and the rink of Pauline Wilding, Doreen Fitts & Sylvia Hill losing 30 shots to 6. This resulted in an overall score of 46 shots to 24 to WGC Crusaders. They both look forward to their next league matches.

Thursday 10 May, 2012. East Herts League (Press Release 20 May)

Welwyn and District "Stags" opened their league season with a win against Rosedale in a match which because of the light and threatening weather was pre-agreed to only consist of 15 ends.
Chris Sherriff's triple (Chris Sherriff, Barry Smith, Ian Snook) never looked like losing, opening up an 18-0 lead after ten ends. The Rosedale rink, skipped by Steve Folbig, fought back but eventually submitted 21-4.
Sam Smith's triple (Sam Smith, Ted Webb, John Lee) didn't have it quite so easy with honours fairly even for the first eight ends. After that however, the Stags forged ahead finally running out winners at 25-11.

Press Release - Sunday 6 May, 2012.

Since on onset of the "drought", the green at Welwyn and District Bowls Club has been waterlogged, and players have been unable to get any early season practice. So it was only to be expected that in the first match of the season, which should have been a home match but had to be played on our opponents green, they would not be very successful. In the event they lost 2-3 to Townsend St.Albans in the Top Club competition. From Welwyn's point of view the highlight of the evening was Mike Poole's convincing win in the singles against Andrew Bryden.
On Saturday the Welwyn and District ladies met a similar fate when they played their home tie away at Clarence Park St.Albans, also losing.
A couple of fine days meant that Welwyn could play their National Two Fours match against Herts BC at home, and on this occasion Welwyn and District won on shots, Phil Russell's rink going down 15-18, whilst Chris Sherrifff's rink won 27-10.
The other Welwyn and District team in the Two Fours competition travelled to Whitethorn BC where they lost on both rinks.
The pre-season recruiting campaign masterminded by Mike Poole has had significant results with about twenty four Welwyn residents joining the club as playing members.

Press Release - Sunday 29 April, 2012.

Members of Welwyn and District Bowls Club celebrated the opening of the new season on 21 April in their traditional way - with a Full English Breakfast, after which club president Reynold Wiles bowled the first wood of the season and declared the green open. Members followed this with an hour or so of social bowling.
This weekend we have had the first of our two open weekend for newcomers to the sport of bowls, and despite the appalling weather there were a steady stream of prospective new bowlers both on Friday evening and on Saturday. However the weather was judged to be too bad for the club top play the opening two matches of the season on Sunday; the men were due to play at home against old adversaries Townsend, and the ladies should have travelled to Barton le Clay.
It is to be hoped that the weather improves next week as league and county competitions start during the week, and again on Friday and Saturday we look forward to meeting more newcomers to the sport.

25 April 2012, Welwyn Ladies Indoor Success

The Welwyn Witches (an appropriate name for our league so some might think!) came top of the Riverain league they were playing in during the winter. It was a tight finish all depending on the last match. As a result they will be in the top league next winter.
Players included Norma Carter, Dorothy Henton, Dilys Hanson, Barbara Marvell, Betty Singleton, Diana Tribe, Hazel Wing, Sue Wingham. Diana Barrett reserved.

21 April 2012, Green Opens after Breakfast Bowls.

In time honoured tradition, members of the club sat down to a full (very) English Breakfast served up by John Lee, Mike Poole and Barry Smith, before Club President Reynold Wiles bowled the first (official) bowl of the season and declared the green open.
